This portrait of John Robert Godley (1814-1861), the founder of the Canterbury settlement was commissioned by his wife, Charlotte, at a time when he was more than half way through his term in New Zealand as representative for the Canterbury Association and virtual Governor of the Canterbury Settlement in the port town of Lyttelton. Mary Townsend depicts a healthy 37-year-old Godley in the prime of life, contrasting strongly with portrait photographs of him at this time which show his ill health clearly in evidence.
Townsend has the distinction of being the first semi-professional woman artist to work in Canterbury. More information
